After initially launching on Steam on September 22nd, 2021, The Long Gate by independent developer David Shaw is making its way to the Nintendo Switch on July 29th, 2021.

Heavily inspired by games such as The Witness and NaissanceE, The Long Gate is a semi-open world puzzle game that sees the player exploring a mysterious collection of caves with varying puzzles, many of which can be completed in a variety of ways. Along with this, the title also includes an original soundtrack composed by musician Nicholas Newman.

When asked about adapting storytelling techniques from the page to the screen Shaw, who has previously published different pieces of literature such as Alone in the Woods and Brain in a Jar said:

I love telling stories through sight and sound because it lets you create a sense of mystery and wonder that is hard to replicate through written words alone.

Shaw also noted that a key reason for porting The Long Gate over to the Nintendo Switch was to make the experience of the title available to more people:

I wanted to bring the game to Switch so that it would be available to more people and for there to be more ways to play it. I also wanted the experience of getting my game onto a console.

With this being Shaw‘s first game to be published, he recalled that he has “learnt so much over the course of this project, porting games to the Nintendo Switch included.” Looking towards his next project he hopes to bring those experiences to even more people on varying platforms.

I know that when I finish my next game in a couple of years, I will be releasing it on Switch and on even more platforms.

If you can’t wait until July 29th you can play The Long Gate now on PC and it’s currently available on Steam for €16.79. For those looking to take the title on the go via the Nintendo Switch, the game is available for pre-order on the Nintendo eShop for €12.59.
